Sonata Arctica es una banda de Power Metal Melódico, proviene de la ciudad de Kemi, Finlandia formada en 1996 bajo el nombre Tricky Beans la banda produjo tres demos: Friend till the end, Agre Pamppers y PeaceMaker.
Después de algunos cambios de personal en 1997, el conjunto cambio su nombre por Tricky Means. Que se sepa a la comunidad del Metal que inicialmente la banda experimentó en estilos musicales lejos del Heavy Metal.En 1999, Tricky Means grabó un nuevo demo titulado FullMoon en Tico Tico Estudios situados en su ciudad natal, Kemi. En el momento de la grabación, el Line-up consistió en: Tony (voz / teclas), Jani (guitarras), Tommy (batería) y Janne (bajo). Esta nueva demo fue la primera exploración de la banda hacia el Heavy Metal. El trademark de la banda de sonido de marca
rápida, melódica y el teclado orientado al Heavy Metal con una clara y alta voz nació. El destino ha querido que, con la ayuda de Ahti Kortelainen de Tico Tico Estudios, el demo FullMoon encontrara su camino a la primera etiqueta de metal de Finlandia, Spinefarm. Al mismo tiempo Tricky Means se convirtio en Sonata Arctica. Más tarde ese mismo año fue lanzado en Finlandia el primer single del grupo, titulado UnOpened, el cual provocó un gran impacto, entrando en los 20 más vendidos en su primera semana tras salir a la venta. Debido a este éxito inicial, pronto la banda había cerrado varios contratos con sellos alrededor del mundo, con vistas al lanzamiento de su álbum debut. El disco fue llamado Ecliptica y posteriormente lanzado a nivel mundial a fines de 1999, obteniendo buenas críticas por parte de la prensa especializada. Por todo esto, Tony Kakko decidió concentrarse en el canto y comenzó a buscar un nuevo integrante para la banda: Mikko Harkin (antes en Kenziner), fue invitado y seleccionado para tocar el teclado.
A principios del 2000, Sonata Arctica fue elegida para telonear a Stratovarius a lo largo de su gira por Europa junto con Rhaspody. Que duro dos meses, durante los cuales Sonata Arctica desempeñó de más de 30 conciertos en 10 países.
